About
my Mission
To guide you towards your health and wellness goals, while taking an anti-diet, weight-neutral, “food is fuel” approach.
Growing up in a Portuguese family, food was always shared, celebrated, and enjoyed. As I grew from a child to an adult, my many sports and athletic endeavors also allowed me to view food as essential in achieving my goals. When I decided to become an RD, I knew I wanted to help others eat in a way that is nourishing and enjoyable, whether they are athletic or not.
Unfortunately we live in diet culture, which in short is defined by Christy Harrison MPH RD as a system of beliefs that “worships thinness and equates it to health and moral virtue”, “promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status”, “demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others”, and “oppresses people who don’t match up with its supposed picture of ‘health'”. Put in other words, diet culture is a form of oppression. I am whole heartedly against this, therefore I practice from a weight-neutral, Health At Every Size lens. This means I do not prescribe diets or weight loss with my clients. My job and mission is to help you find an individual eating style that honors your body, energy needs, beliefs, tastes, while addressing any underlying health conditions.
Finding an outpatient eating disorder dietitian is sometimes hard, especially here in the RI/Southcoast MA area. I accept clients struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating that are appropriate for the outpatient setting- whether you have an “official” diagnosis or not, if you feel your relationship to food and body is struggling, I am here to help you. If you are wondering whether outpatient eating disorder care is right for you, check out NEDA’s helpful guide: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/toolkit/parent-toolkit/level-care-guidelines-patients.
Additional special populations I work with include but are not limited to: those that are physically active, from baseball players to gym-goers to ultra-marathoners; and those seeking help with shifting to an ethically vegetarian or vegan diet and lifestyle. Diet culture is strong in these two special populations and I would love to help you move towards a healthy relationship to food and body no matter your lifestyle.
